high idle

here's my problem. when i start my car it idles around 900rpm for 4-5sec then jumps up to 1,500-2,000rpm depending on the day. ive replaced almost ALL the sensors and the computer isn't popping any codes. i have set, reset, and reset the timing, haven't been able to fnd any vacuum leaks. everything seems to be where it needs to. anyone have any ideas?

Has the idle screw on the throttle body been turned for some reason?

as far as i know it hasn't. i checked that by turning it a hair each way and it didn't change anything. i also just started having a problem getting the timing set. ive hand cranked the motor to top dead center. in the books it says to disconnect a plug but it doesn't show which one or where it is.

i dont have floor mats. i know which cylinder is #1. i'll reset everything and i can't get t to start. i just bought a computer-less distributor. im hoping that will fix my timing issue. as far as the idle are there any sensors that can be adjusted?

check the distributor rotor, cause i had a similar problem it was idling at about 1200 and it brought it down to about 550, i think it was that :S

You need to disconnect the EST connector to properly set your timing. IIRC, it's a tan single-wire connector, somewhere around the passenger side strut tower. If your timing is too high, it will cause a high idle, and it will ping under load.

Some other causes are improperly adjusted idle stop-screw, as well as incorrect TPS setting, if you have an adjustable TPS sensor.
