Hot enough to make Ceramic Headers glow?

Well I haven't driven the firebird in a couple of years and finally took it in to address a check engine light issue. Turns out the MAF was bad. bought the Microtech one and the check engine light went out. The mechanic adjusted the timing to spec as it was advanced 10 degrees ( I must have done that when i was playing around with timing..oops.). He said it would have passed smog BUT the car got so hot during the high-rev test that the ceramic coated edelbrock headers started glowing and a plug boot caught on fire!!! Now the boots on the drivers side are pretty far away from the pipes so I'm wondering how that could happen? Granted on the passenger side I'm having a hell of a time keeping them from burning with the AIR tubes on the headers in the way and the superram there too.

The car has never gotten that hot. The only things that have changed since I parked it are that I removed the AFPR gauge because it leaked and the mechanic disconnected the MSD-6A because the tached bounced all over the place when reved. I have the MSD component that stops that just haven't plugged it in yet.

Any input on this one. As always your help is appreciated!

Sustained load, like on the rollers, plus relitivly little air movment can cause the engine to get pretty warm. I've never seen ceramic headers glow though. The timing could also be to far retarded. A late spark can cause the fuel to not burn completely enough so it's still burning when it hits teh exhaust pipes. If it was running good at 10*, set it at 10*.

It is not uncomon to see thin none coated headers to glow at night. Ceramic may be a diferent story.

My best guess is like said above the timing is too retarded. Try advancing it and see what it does, worst case you gotta turn it back.

I'm not sure if they're doing roller smog checks in Chico yet, probably just the idle and cruising rpm test while parked.
