Signs and Symptoms of TPS

What are the signs and symptoms of a failed or failing TPS? Do they just die or can they have intermittent failure?

They can fail intermittently. It should set off your ses light. I've seen them cause idle, and even transmission problems.

I just had that happen on my '99 S-10 4.3L Automatic. The CE Light was on and it was banging 1st gear then it got to the point it wouldn't go higher than 10mph at 3000rpm, idle was abnormally high, and wouldn't shift into any other gear.
I used AutoEnginuity's OBDII PC scan tool to scan the ECM.
It indicated a bad TPS, replaced it, cleared the code, and all was back to normal (idle didn't drop to the normal 500rpm until after the test drive.)
