I'm working on my 383 and I want to get a stall pretty soon. What I am going for is a high & fast idle. What would I need to do to make the car idle like that. I saw a few cars at the car show not long ago and they all idled high and fast. Does that have anything to do with the stall converter? If I have a high stall can I have the idle set up high? Any info on this would help me out a lot in choosing the right stall? Which should i go with?
I'll have a big cam in there too. It calls for at least a 3200 stall or somewhere around that.

Someone told me that the reason some cars idle like that is because they wouldn't idle if it was set any lower.

It would be better if you provided more information about your motor.
You can't just turn the idle set screw for a higher idle because then the butterflies won't close which will cause a stumble when you get off the throttle then get back on it.
BIG cams need higher idle due to lots of overlap. This is not a good thing for a daily driver. Plus a 3000 stall converter is also not good for a daily driver. Your comments lead me to believe you were seeing race engines or a special tune just for the show.
Do you have high compression heads with big valves? How about forged pistons? An engine (and trans) is a system. ALL the parts have to match!

I dont have heads yet, but what would you reccommend? i have speed pro forged stroker pistons and forged eagle H beams. the cam i wanted to use was pretty big and called for a 3200 stall i think. what head and cam combo would you reccommend to achieve what i want. (fast high idle). i would like to have pretty high compression.
will having a high stall compensate for the big cam and make it idle high?

i hear that AFR195's are great. they are aluminum and good for high compression. i think the valves are pretty big too. ?

A high stall converter that is smaller in diameter is going to net you a higher idle since the engine doesn't require as much power to turn the converter. I noticed a few hundred rpms diffrence going from a 700-r4 with 2400 to a th-350 with a 4000 stall. Drivability is all about how you want it. If you dont mind driving at high rpms and not going all that fast down the road then you would like it. I dont drive mine everyday anymore, if I did I wouldn't like my setup since it is sometimes a PITA to drive thru traffic but I like it when I go o the track!
