No start, backfires!
Well, I've been trying to get my car to start for a few days now and I've run out of ideas.
At first I wasn't getting a spark, so I replaced the distributor cap and rotor and now I get a good spark. My battery's dead so I jumped it off a truck, and it cranked for a while then backfired and shot a good 3 foot flame out of my exhast. My brother told me I should bleed the fuel lines so I did that. And it still doesn't start, it cranks then detonates.
When I turn the key to the on position I can hear the fuel pump prime and run for a few seconds. I don't have/can't find a pressure gauge on my fuel line, but when I bleed from the valve on the fuel rail, there is enough pressure to shoot a tablspoon or so of gasoline 1 or 2 feet, but after that tablespoon or so I don't get any more gas from the valve untill I let my fuel pump run again.
Does anyone know what might be causing my engine not to start? I don't know what else I can do at this point.

first your brother is a god and second you forgot to mention it was backfiring out intake and exhaust and the fuel doesnt even smell like gas anymore which means it is time to dump the tank clean it out purge the lines and start over with a new filter!

if your gas is really old change it. Get a fuel pressure guage ($36.99 at Autozone) you should have around 40psi of pressure after the pump quits running. I had this same problem with my 87 tpi ta & it turned out to be the ignition module went bad & took the pickup coil with it. You can have the ignition module checked at Autozone or Advance but it is not real reliable. Have them check it about 10 times in a row since they usually fail when they get hot.
You could have spark like I did but if the pickup coil is bad the spark could be firing at the wrong time. Use only AC Delco module or pickup coil since aftermarket ones are not reliable (especially Accel). I found this out the hard way. If the fuel is old don't forget a new filter.
