Cam in 305
over winter break im going to be tuning up my 305.. until i get a 350 (im buying stuff and putting it on my 305, and the stuff should swap right over to a 350). i have headers and true dual exhaust on her right now, and im going to be putting a holley street dominator dual plane intake with a 750 double pumper on, and while im doin that, a new timing chain, cam, rockers, and springs. i was wandering what a good cam with alot of lobe would be. im going to need to change my torque converter too i realize. i've heard people talk about a comp xe262, but i searched it on jegs and it was 450 dollars... maybe i searched wrong? but either way, any and all help is much appreciated.

that 750 will be too much for that 305 if you want to keep it streetable. shoot, the 750 i had on my 11 second 350 was never quite streetable enough for me. a 650 will do GREAT for both the 305 and 350. the xe262 cam would be a decent camshaft. the $450 price tag was likely for the whole kit, which includes timing chain, valve springs, retainers, locks, seals, lifters and camshaft...which is a pretty decent deal for all of that stuff.
honestly, if you're doing a cam swap, save up a little more and put in that 4" bore kit at the same time...since you are planning to go to one anyhow.

Wow 750 is big! I know most people get in there head it's better to go bigger, but I personly really like the 600's 650's Vac Sec. I've seen some really tuff 350's really hammer with them, and are much more enjoyable to drive on the street.
With the Cam, I've always really liked the Comp Cams range, but I know first hand a friend of mine installed an Isky 270 and that thing is a rocket!
You would swar it's a 350, it's gone nose and nose with some pretty tuff 350's and only just got beatin over the long term run right up high.

Alright, I know this is probably a stupid question, but when people say "streetable", what exactly do they mean? And thank you mw66, i'll try to trade my 750 for a 650. And thank you Francis.
Na worries, and that's not a stupid question at all.
Streetable, means that it starts easy, idles fairly well, has a nice snappy pedal feel on the throttle, doesn't use massive amounts of fuel, has no hesitations, or misses through the rev range, and goes like anything off the lights!!!
]
Non streetable,usually means, things like it wont idle, or over heats, or uses to much petrol to drive, sluggish pedal feel or has to be doing 7000rpm to go anywhere quick, I guess just taking away the basic nice qualities people should look for instead of the "go faster sticker". Bigger is not always best. I've seen some well built little 350 Chev's and 351 Fords really take it to some big dollar over the top "bigger is better" theory engines, and hammered em in to the ground.
You will be much much happier with a 650, that's for sure.

A 650 DP will work ok with moderate jets. I always like to use big carbs i had a 700DP on a 283 and it burned white almost its all jetting and power valve BUT its a good idea if u decide to build a 350 specially if u want a bigger cam and beter intake someday all u need to do it jet it up. Streetable might be an issue if is a vac sec. might be a decent idea but from personal experiance i have vac. sec carbs a dp made better power for me no matter what and i was always lokking for power.
