ummm weird problem...

so i was crusing around with my friend today... and i went to reverse to turn around... gave it a little gas in reverse and all of a sudden the car seemed to wheel hop violently... so when that happend i pushed in the clutch and things went down hill from there.... the shifter on my tranny seems to have moved back an inch and a half.... when i put it into 2nd,4th or reverse the shifter hits the centre consol... and when i put it in 3rd it looks like it should be in neutral....5th and 1st almost look perfectly verticle instead of slanted forward like they use to be....

If it were me, I'd have gotten under there and looked to see if anything came loose, broke or physically shifted and why. Once I knew that, if I had a question as to why, I''d gather up all of my relevant information that could help and fix i... er... post up here askin' what could have caused X.

What you gave us was a conglomeration of info that really tells us nothing mut the fact that you think your tranny shifted back an inch and a half.

That all said, I wouldn't drive that thing until you know what the hell happened.

i have no idea what the hell happend... put the car in reverse to turn around... gave it some gas to get moving.. and the car started to wheel hop.... i got out... looked under the car and looked to see the best i could if anything was broken... tranny mount appeared fine... everything in the rear suspension seemed fine...only thing that seemed somewhat outta place to me was that the driveshaft appeard to be sticking a little further then it should out of the tailstock of the transmission... i basically limped the car home... and then i had to goto work.... i may have time tomorrow to jack the car up and get a better look.. if not i can get it to class on friday and throw it on the lift.... i honestly wont really know if anythings broken until the cars in the air and i can see.. im just trying to gather a little knowledge from others as to what could have happened...

the wheel hop issue is a trans mount i bet. Some time you cant tell if they are bad just by looking at them, you need to get under and get a close look. If the mount is severly damaged the engine will have tilted back until it has rested on the crossmember which might explain why the shifter has appeared to have moved back.

The wheelhop could have potentially put a twist in the driveshaft. Anytime the wheels stick, slip, stick, slip you can shock the shaft and twist it. That would explain why the slip spline of the drive shaft looks like it came out of the tranny. Either way the driveline needs a close inspection.

Best of luck

I'd look there first.

yea, the tranny tail looks pretty normal.
I'd look carefully at the torque arm mount -> tranny bolts, and shifter ->tranny bolts.

I had the shifter bolts come loose on me while I was driving. Going down a hill in 3 gear, all of a sudden my shifter was decorative, just flopping around... Like playing with my johnson or something, just for enjoyment. Stuck in 3rd gear, I just veered off the road, parked, and walked to work. Anyway, make sure those aren't broken or anything.

But yea, I think your tranny mount is the main obvious problem there.
