what should my timing be set at?
I have a 383 and I keep trying to set my timing and when I think I got everything running good I put the car into gear and it stalls out every time. I have it set at idles at 750 rpm and I moved it up to 1000 rpm to see if that would make a different when i put it into gear and same thing keeps happening. I have my timing set at about 12 degree. I would like to know what my timing should be at for a 383 stroker?
Timign won't be much different on a stroker than on a regular 350.
Are you setting the base with the vacuum advance disconnected?
Also, are you idling it down real low when you set the intial timing? The centrifugal can often kick in at fairly low RPMs, depending on your choice of springs and weights, and cause you to get a false initial timing reading. Then you drop it in gear, RPMs drop, timing retards further and it stalls out.
Obviously, the idle mixture screws on the carb must be adjusted reasonably close to optimum as well. If it's marginally lean it'll often stall out when you drop it in gear.
Lastly, you're not trying to idle a big cam against a stock converter, are you? If you've got a big cam and drop a load on it at idle (stock tight converter) it will often stall out.
