charging problems

i bought a new battery,,and still my battery kept going dead..so i bought a new battery..still could not charge..i tested the altenator it was good..then the battery it was good.then a guy told me to check the wire that goes from the ignition to the altenator.he said the wire should have volts.he said it was called the number 2 pin off the alt.well no power to that wire from the ignition.,.so he told me to wire that wire from the altenator to the battery..well it worked..is it going to shorten my altenator life and battery life? what should i do to fix it completly..and without that wire hooked up my choke light stays on when i hook it up it goes away>

I'd be more prone to clean and verify a good connection at the starter and block and then start tracing things. I'd also likely not rewire anything unless necessary and I couldn't replace the defective (if so) wire with a new one. Cutting and pasting is great in MS Word, not so good in an engine bay.
