how to tell between L98 350 and the 305?
how to tell between L98 350 and the 305?
I have a couple questions, the first may be painfully obvious.
I’m going to look at and more then likely get a ’91 Z28 this weekend. How can I tell that it has the L98 and not the 305? Did all the Z28’s come with the L98?
Second is, I just want opinions on if I’m getting a good deal or not. The car I’m looking at getting is a ’91 Z28 with about 130,000 mi and I’m going to pick it up for $1000. It’s in good running condition and was recently a daily driver. I live in the snow belt so the car does have rust in the typical areas. The carfax showed that the mileages is not accurate but you can follow the mileage and looks to only be off by at MAX 10k. Everything I’ve seen on this board for the most part has the 305, since this has the L98 350 I take it that I should not pass this up?
Thanks all, I look forward to being an active user of the board now that i'll have a car!

that sounds like a pretty good deal. i'd take it in a second, but how much rust are we talking about? yea just take it and if you really didn't want to mess with it you could probably get that much by parting it out

Remove one of the cylinder head valve covers. Look for the head casting # . If it ends in 083 or 113 the motor has 350TPI heads and is likely a 350ci motor. if the casting numbers end in 081 the heads are 305TPI heads and the motor is likely a 305 TPI.
If the heads have a different casting number than this like 191 or 197 (TBI swirl port) some one changed the motor.
its not a "L-98".
I'd be more concerned of the cars overall condition. you can hop a 305 TPI motor to smoke a L-98 with out much trouble.

Thanks!
Sweet good info thanks!
The rust is not really bad from what i can tell in the pic's. I have not seen it in person yet. It looks like mostly surface rust around the fenders and the bottom of the drivers door is all rusted. Aside from a few little dents in the door and the rust its in good shape.
I can't wait.. Rather excited. I had an 99 TA up till last year when i lost my job. I loved that car. Can't wait to have a American muscle car again!

You can also tell, if the engine is stock, by looking at the 8th digit of the VIN number. If its an F, the car came with a 305 TPI. If its an 8, the car came with a 350 TPI. Other clues include dual catalytic converters, and 4 wheel disc brakes. Those never came on 305 TPI automatics.
