Large Fuel Tank Questions....Check it out...

So time has come to begin gathering pieces for the rebuild. I'm looking for an aftermarket fabricated fuel tank for my '89 RS. I'm needing the largest possible capacity that can be sumped for a 800hp fuel injected car. Does anyone know of any aftermarket companies who already fab this up, or has anyone got a fabbed fuel cell/tank in thier car???? The car's enroute to a 14pt roll cage and a 200+mph top speed and is gonna need a cup to fill her thirst......

i appreciate the link to summit's web site. they are a great source of aftermarket parts. i should have been more specific. i am looking for a tank that fits in the factory location, even with some modding that can hold mayby 1/4-1-3 more fuel. In the end, the tank/cell is going to be caged...basically the same way a NASCAR style tank is caged with 1x1 box tubing to keep it secured and help to prevent penetrating impacts....

I figured thats what you do... I have seen people put their fuel cells in the stock tank location (such as what I want to do). In the same way you described too....so what wont work? So I know, because I could have sworn thats what you do.....Lol. Sorry to say but I am lost....if your making the cage around it couldnt you make some brackets too or something.

I am new to everything about cars so I am just throwing out ideas.....I need to learn from my mistakes...so what better to do that then to read everything and suggest everything. But yeah, someone should make fuel cell conversion kits for thirdgens....that would be awesome. I want a 20g fuel cell. Aluminum, lightweight, looks good, no old contaminants.....only pure gasoline (94 of course). Sorry I babbled on this one

I suggest you get under your car and try to visualize where that extra 1/4 capacity will go. When you realize that your new fuel tank is going to interfere with everything else in the rear of the car, you may reconsider.

The factory filled up ALL the space under that hump for the fuel tank you have. Any extra capacity is gonna come from two places:

1) From below, limiting axle travel and interfering with a lot of stuff
or
2) Cutting the floor pan to expand into the cabin. I'm pretty sure track rules will make you have to seal it off from the passenger area.

If your cutting the floor and caging the car, then I suggest to just select a generic one with the dimensions that are close to what you need. I don't know who would make a custom fuel cell, but you can bet it'll be $$$.

This is what I did. It is a 15 gallon tank, but it def holds more than that.

My axle has all the travel it could ever want. I could have stuff a 20 gallon I bet. But I wanted to stay neer stock.

This is when I was first getting it in there.

Here is a cover i made for it and the whole project a little further along.

ignore the new trunk mounted wireing harness. It is welded to the rollbar. You can see how the tank fits finally.

If you want about 100X more pics of my car, head over to my CD site.

hope I helped.

See I think I might just go with the 15g fuel cell and have it fabbed up to my stock tank location. Our tanks are more than 15g and our tanks are not exactly the cleanest shaped tanks either....so I think getting a 15g fabbed in the stock location will work fine. But of course I have no clue on doing any of this will work....so I guess I will have to wait.....until I have spare cash to throw at this job. By the way your cell looks awesome.....but I cant do that because my car is a street car....Lol. Wont see the cops chasing me. LMAO.

Not sure I get what you mean about your car being a street car? Thanks for the compliments though. My car is a street car too...

If I didn't have to pass emissions, it would be totally legal once I get the damn exhaust to be quiet. (intalling this afternoon)

Can you even see out the window? Thats why. I know if I drive around here, my town, I will def. get pulled over for having a blocked rear window....its like having BLACK TINT....they cant see....you must be doign something wrong....so then I get pulled over and talked to.....in a full random pull-over. I dont like those. But anyway get some pictures from looking in the rear-view mirror and from looking through the front windshield...I want to see how this thing looks. LMAO. I still think your cars amazing though....I just want my tank to be hidden....lose weight and nobody would know type a deal.

NOW POST SOME PICTURES. Lol. If you want.

I will find some pics to show this I guess and let see what you think.

This kinda shows how there is nothing in the way at all, not even a centimeter of lost sight...

ummm....

Here is a perfect one.

Notice how you can see the spoiler attaching at the base. Just like stock. You can see EVERYTHING.
----------
One last one. This is the only pic I can find on my site that has the camera kinda looking out the back.

Do you see now that there is nothing in the way at all. The cover never goes higher than 1" LOWER than the rear seat, so how in the worl could the cover be blocking your view?????????????

Let me know if you still don't get it. It REALLY REALLY REALLY just looks like a cargo cover, that was a stock option in 1991. I used to have one.

Totally my bad. thats why i asked for the pictures. In the first one posted it looked like it was higher than the rear seats.....AWESOME JOB. Did that fit right into the trunk....or did you modify something to make it fit.

Also, how do you fill up, you must park real close to the pump.

P.S. That must look funny. A guy pumping gas into his trunk.....well your car isnt exactly stock looking so they might get it. LMAO. I want exactly what you did done to mine....OH YEAH.

I love that setup better than mine.

Actually all pumps have hoses more than long enough. just like filling any old american car when they used to have the fill behind the licence plate. It is pretty normal. And yeah, I get some really confused people looking at me as I fill my trunk with gas lol.

To get it to fit I cut a hole in the trunk. It goes under the car about 2 inches. If you want, it can sit in all in the car, but then you will def have it go above the rear seats. This way it sits just below and the feed lines are allready outside the car. It is hung with 4 metal rods, and it is viration resistant due to the cross bar that I welded on top of it. It would be easy to drop out if I ever need to, and it can't shake or anything. It is nice, since it has 2 feeds, a rollover valve and a return line inlet. I also is very well baffled and has antislosh baffles and is foam filled. Great tank for the $. WIth the cover, it looks almost factory. Poeple have no idea what to think of it... lol.

It works for me, and thanks again for the compliments. It took a lot of work to do and a big imagination, since I have never seen anyone do anything like it b4. Later.

Just gut the rear section and make the inside pan flat.
You would then have all kinds of room to run a tank behind the axel.

200mph car doens't need a rear well area

I am just a kid in colledge. I started making parts after reading a few books and dumping 200 bucks on a welder. It really is much easier than your imagination might make it seem.

Oh and on a side note. If you want a fuel cell and only 15 gallons, and don't wanna do what I did, there is a company out there that sells them for our cars, custom made to fit in the stock location. I have no idea about the company, but if you use the search on here you can find it, I have talked about fuel cells and stuff like this for over a year now. Search for my name and for fuel cells, it will come up.

DAMN! that is for seriouse racing though. That is like if you DO plan to crash at someplace. hehe. No, thats not what I saw. There is a guy on here with one of the ones I was talking about. It even had a pump and filter mounted to the outside of it, real nice sleak install, I would have bought it if it had existed back when I needed one. Oh well. It is pricey though.

My cell was like 180, pump was 250 and my filters by the pump were like 80.
So around 500 or so.

I remember he paid something like 800 I think. It was a while ago. If you can afford it, find it. If not, just do what I did.

I also went WAY WAY overkill on the fuel setup. My pump pushes 250GPH, and is fully rebuildable. I also run dual inlets and a dual filters back there. so that adds a lot. If you use a simple holly blue and a single filter, you can get it all done for 1/2 of what I did.

Lol. At least its SCCA Legal which is what I am doing this coming summer.

But as you said about that guy....I went back to June this year and cant find anything....(there are alot of posts with the word fuel cell in it)

What was the guy's name?

And as for your setup.....I would do it the same way....are those oil filters? if so I want to use K7N gold filter with the filtermag....just in case some metal particles get in there.

oil filter??? no... Why would you think that. They are Fram FUEL filters. I got them cuz they filter just as small of particles as some of the best filters out there and they are a convenient shape when it comes time to replace them. Nice cansiter style. I really hate inline stuff, where you have to move the lones around a lot.

Why would you think they are oil filters? They are attached to my fuel cell???

Also they are mounted before my fuel pump. In the REAR of my car??? That would be crazy to have oil travel all the way back there to get filtered!!!!

Well anyways, what you said is really really confusing me, so I will let you respond so I can get back to helping you with what you need.

Oh and I have no idea what the guys name way. don't search every post where fuel cell is said, only look in the titles.

Yeah the whole system is plumbed with twist-lok connections. And the blue silicone hoses, A nice cheap alternative to braided. Easily cuts with a knife, so it is easy to work with, and seals great. The twistlock connections need some oil to slide in well, but once they are in, even just 1 of the 3 barbs, there is no way in this life time you can manage to pull it out. Good stuff and doesn't cost much.

yeah they do kinda look like oil filters I guess, oh and ps, I too am using a K&N oil filter, only the best for my baby hehe.

It is all 8-AN line.

Again, just search in the TITLES.

OK well I don't know how to put this.......

You are a VERY bad searcher... Like very very bad. lol

I typed in "fuel cell" in the fab boards, and told it to ONLY LOOK IN THE TITLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and BAMMMMM

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/fabr...ight=fuel+cell

Third one down!!!!!!

C'mon man, how can I help you out if you can't even find super easy info on a super easy site?? Gimme a break.

If you learn how to use the search well, you will not have any questions or reason to make new threads.
