Car won't start after after build up?? smoke out intake!!, timing problem?
Well I just got my car back together and it's not starting.
It ran fine before the tear down so my ingnition system sould be fine.
I have gas I have spark but no start up.
the battery is fine and everything is plugged in.
the only thing it dose is a puff of white smock comes out of the
carb. so I'm guessing my timing is maybe severely retarded?
.
Anyone got any other hints? I just installed a new cam
(yes I installed it dot to dot) so I need to start it to break it in.
I'm getting worried that all break it before I get it started.
What is the best way to set the timing again with the engine all
put together?
Anyone broke a lob off their cam from excessive cracking?
Thanks, JR
Heres a pic..... what a shiney paper weight

Dot-to-Dot; 6 & 12 O'clock (for #6 piston TDC) is used because it's easier to align.
You still need to find the #1 TDC (both dots at 12 O'clock) on the compression stroke before stabbing the Dizzy and pointing the rotor to the #1 spark plug wire, unfortunately you can't do that with the timing cover in place.
Place finger over (not in) the #1 spark plug hole turn crank by hand clockwise until the pressure pushes your finger off the hole - works better if you have an extra pair of hands - continue turning the crank until the balancer groove aligns with the zero mark on the timing tab, that's the #1 piston compression stroke at DTC.
If you do this correctly the Dizzy will be firing very close to TDC and it should start on the first try.

thanks all try that.
but is the puff of smoke out the intake a sign that the timing is off, or is something else terrible wrong?

Yes your "timing" is off.
As rgarcia said, it's off by 180°. You have #1 firing on the instance of #1 TDC when #1 is at the end of the exhaust stroke and the beginning of the intake stroke, and #6 is firing; so when #1 gets hit with spark, its intake valve is open. That's the reason for the puff of smoke.
You need for #1 to get its spark on the OTHER instance of #1 TDC during a complete engine cycle; namely, the one where #1 is at the top of its compression stroke.
Do as he said, things will be much better. Then go from there.

Yeah timing off 180. I had the same problem a few weeks ago when i went to bust mine off. turn the distributor 180 and fire it up. Mine hit soon as i turned the key. maybe yours will too. Good luck.

update
well I got an electrical problem out of they way.
ignition switch was bad and only fired the coil once before
power just cut off.
BUT... now that that is fixed the car is trying so hard to start
the most I've gotten it two exhaust notes.
Is my timming to advanced or retared too much?
My timming is right I reset it with three points:
valve covers off, valvetrain saying it's on copression stroke
spark plug out and straw telling me piston it at the top
timming mark at 12'o clock.
I got gas and spark now so It's got to be timming now right?
Thanks, JR

it's the gas @_@
well go figure....
I have rust in my fuel.
I'm just wondering how long its been there.
cars only been sitting for 2 months.
here’s a labeled picture
looks pretty gross hu
the picture shows what the gas looks like
and how it spreads and dries when on the ground.
You can't see it no well but to clean new gas spreads perfectly round
as too the contaminated fuel which acts wonky.
I'm not sure why it looks worse at the FP then in the tank.
enjoy... I'm off to drain & pull my gas tank.
