New alum head install

Planning on installing new aluminum heads on 383. the heads have no
EGR passage. Will any EGR codes be set on start-up?

If it's a factory EFI system on top, NO, not at startup. If it's a TPI it should throw a code shortly after warming up and driving the car around since the EGR valve in a TPI motor actually has a temperature probe to measure if hot exhaust gasses are passing through the valve when the ECM commands it. On a TBI or cabureted engine there is no such sensor and the ECM must INFER if the EGR system is actually functioning from other engine sensors. Typically this will require several minutes of steady highway driving before lighing off the dreaded 'Code 32' (driving around town, on and off the throttle constantly will never set it).

Hey Damon,
Thanx for the info on the EGR valve. Yes I've got the original ( though modified ) TPI on the 383. I'm wondering if there's a way to defeat -er-
trick the ecm into "seeing" a functioning EGR valve or am I stuck with
the code ?? Thanx again for your info!

If you're programming yourself, I believe you can disable EGR in the prom....

Yeah, disabling in the chip seems to be about the only way to do it unless you can figure out another way to ground that temp switch any time the EGR valve opens.
