Fuel pump problem ?

1990 5.0 TPI Formula. Car will start intermittently, well at least it used to. It would run before and after it got hot, it would not start back up. Now, it wont start and i can not hear the fuel pump come on when i turn the key on. It was low on gas, but i put a few gallons in and still cant hear the pump. If the fuel level is not enough, will i still hear the pump ? I think i am going to try to find the fuel pump relay and replace that as a start. Is there anything else i can check ? The car is at my parents house, 6hrs away and i want to take some parts with me when i go there next month and try to get it running. Any help would be great...thanks

Presuming the starter will still operate (VATS is not locking you out):
  • Make sure the pump relay has power from the 20A ATO ECM/Fuel pump fuse (near the radiator). Make sure the fuel pump relay is operating.
  • EVEN IF the relay is bad, the auxiliary oil pressure switch should provide power to the pump once the engine is cranked long enough to build 7 pounds of oil pressure. That usually takes only a few seconds.
  • Take a meter or test lamp to check power right at the pump connector at the rear. Also verify the ground connection.

I will have to check that out..and yes,the car will crank. Is there a sensor that wont let the fuel pump come on if low on fuel ?

No. The pump should run regardless of the tank fuel level.
