Ive got to replace the fuel pump in my 91 z28.

We replaced the 305 with a 350.

I dont really expect any other mods to the engine...so I dont need anything fancy, or high performance.

The car sat for 7 years and the fuel pump was locked up, and the foamy pad thing around it completely broke down when we removed it...

So I guess my question is...will a standard autozone style fuel pump do, or should I look into getting one of these assemblies that comes with everything (since it sat so long)?

Im also seeing big differences in prices...Im on a pretty tight budget here...please make a recommendation?

 

for a stock motor a stock pump is plenty.
check the sending unit out to make sure its good, i believe you can find how to check it & the specs for it over on the electrical board.

i would put in an A/C Delco pump along with a new strainer & fuel filter.
i would stay away from autozone pumps, especially on something that is a pretty big job to do like a thirdgen is.
the Delco pump does cost more, but it is a better quality pump.
the foam cover is to reduce noise from the pump, a Delco pump will come with a new one.
if its not in the box with the pump, get a new seal for the sending unit.
make certain you get the right pump, that they know it is tuned port injection & not throttle body injection.

it probably wouldn't be a bad ideal to flush both the pressure & return fuel lines out with at least compressed air.
while you have the tank out, make sure its clean inside, water & trash like rust will kill even the best pumps in short order. also get any old gas out while you have the tank out.
after sitting so long you may have injector problems, any thing from leaking injectors or O-rings to stuck injectors.

The tank has been emptied...but Im not quite sure whats the best way to clean it out...it does have some rust and stuff inside, but not loose that I can see.

I was under the impression that the foam padding was to keep the pump cool during periods of low fuel, where the pump is not totally submerged?

Ive seen pumps for $65, and $219!

Like I said, I dont anticipate any real mods or anything...nothing that should require more fuel (no new intake, or throttlebody or anything)
