Cranks but won't start

OK this is probably going to be long winded but here goes. My dad said if nobody here can help then the car can't be helped. I have a 89RS with the 2.8 from Hell. I have fuel pressure 42 lbs. (although I don't think the injectors are firing), power TO the coil, a new ICM, tested the VATS system, unplugged it and checked for OHMs, tests OK. I get absolutely no spark from the coil. Replaced the distributer, the ECM, we have gone through the manual at least 3 times and cannot get this thing to fire. It used to start once in awhile, not often enough to make it dependable to drive. It Started after replacing the distributer but again still only occasionally. I've read hundreds of threads on here and done what seems to be anything remotely close to my problem, still no go. Is there anyone that can help a true (But frustrated) Camaro fan ?

I can't remember... is that the distributor with the ignition module under the rotor? If so, is that new also?

My 87 TBI, 350 truck had similar behavior then one day it finally quit all together. If the ignition module is bad, then the injectors won't fire.

On the other hand, your problem sounds like a broken wire somewhere. Wiggle it enough or get in just the right attitude and you get a connection...

good luck

It is the distributor with the ignition module under the rotor. I actually replaced the ignition module and had the original tested at an auto parts store and it tested good. I sure hope it's not a loose wire somewhere because if I haven't come across it already it's going to be very tough to track down. Thanks for the post.

this is a copy & paste, so everything may not apply, what can i say, im lazy right now.

you may have a bad ignition coil, i always replace the coil when ever i replace the module.

check for power when cranking at the ignition coil, on one side is the power side, the other side is the trigger side. use a test light to check it. to find which side is the power in, unplug the connector at the coil & turn the key on, one side should light the test light, the other side won't. if you do have power during cranking, with the coil connector still disconnected get your test light setup so one lead of it is hooked to the power side & the other lead is hooked to the trigger side of the connector. now have someone crank the motor over, the test light should flash, the test light will actually flash on & off quickly, or it will be off or will only flicker if the module is not triggering the coil.
if it does not flash you have a problem some where with the module or pickup coil in the distributor or a problem with the wiring.
if the test liight does flash but you still have no fire from the coil, the coil is bad.

if you have fire from the coil but not from the distributor cap, you have a bad cap or rotor.

I had a similar problem with my 305 and after getting very frustrated finally just swapped the injectors with my other camaro (yeah I have three) and it came to life. But the car had been sitting for a while and hadn't been ran in 6 months or so due to a motor rebuild. I can't help on the electrical side of things, but just passing on what I experienced. Good luck!!
