i have a small block 350 with 305 heads that appear to stock with the motor. i would like to build a nice street strip combination but i dont know the max lift of the heads to be able to chose a good cam or if they are even worth keeping for what i want to do.i have the option to get a set of 350 heads for cheap if it would be worth it. What should i do?

go for the 350 heads if you can afford it get vortecs and swap your intake prolly good for another 50hp while staying budget minded, i know vortecs stock will hold up to a .460 gross lift cam

Most unmodified Vortecs will handle .460" lift. Some will only take .440" lift. The only way to know is to check each valve with the seals and retainers you are going to use.
Whether it is worth is depends upon what 305 heads you have. Some work very well on 350's, and will rival Vortecs if ported. On the other hand, some 350 heads will be better than the 305's, a lot are worse than some 305's, and a lot of 305 heads shouldn't even be considered for a 305.
So, need to know more about what 305 and what 350 heads you have. Casting #'s would be very valuable in that regard.
But, we still couldn't tell you for sure how much lift they could take.
