try tightening all the bolts that hold down the bracket. it could be that a nut or bolt is loose. and while your at it, check the rest of the bolts on your accessories like your alternator, power steering pump and water pump.

then it could be the bearings. take it to a shop and ask them if thers excess play in the bearing, i cant tell you from here, its a feel type thing. if you wanna try yourself, remove the belt, and shake the pulley around and see if its makin noises and moving alot, and compare it to your waterpump or your alternator to see what it should feel like.

EDIT: are your exhaust bolts tight? mayb its an exhaust leak your hearing...or mayb its another accessory, how sure are you that its the compressor?

alright well then if no bolts are loose, and its nothing else, then its your bearings. take the compressor belt off and shake the pulley around a bit. if its excessively moving, then replace the pump.

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
These cars always do that. Mine has done it since new, to some extent; as have lots of others with the same complaint.

Its caused by the natural pulsating sort of action as each cylinder in the compressor (there are 4) compresses. The belt goes alternately slack and tight, and the whole thing resonates as a result. It usually quits when the RPMs get up past 1100 or so.

The fundamental problem is that the brackets are weak. Leaving parts off, or incorrect assembly, makes it DRAMATICALLY worse. Typical parts that get left off include the brace that goes from the top of the BIG bracket back to the intake next to the carb (aftermarket intakes ), and the one that bolts to the 2 front exh man bolts (improperly installed headers ).

There was an add-on bracket that became available in about 85, that went from the rear of the big bracket, back to one of the center exh man bolts.

Best place to start is by making sure that EVERY bracket and EVERY bolt is present.

Axle/Gears: not the best not the worst
that is the tensioner pulley used to keep the serpintine belt tight if your have that set up... which has a big spring and a pulley on a lever to pull slack out of the belt and a little movement on that is normal
