installing oil pump

(406 sbc)
i know its pretty simple. but hey . you can never been to sure when your building a motor, especially your first. anyways I can mount the oil pump, and figure i would. I just have to tack weld the pick up to the pump first, anyways. the box for the pump came with a small spring , about the thickness of a pen. Also had a bushing pin by th elooks of it included about 3/4" long and 1/8" thick. if I remember. where do these go?

I got the melling metal oil pump shaft.

I also need a bolt, what length and size of bolt is needed?

thanks

cheers

Car: Yes

Transmission: Sometimes

The spring is the pressure regulator. You can knock the roll pin put that's in the pump, and change the spring, and they gave you a new pin. I'd suggest you use the stiffer spring.

You need an oil pump bolt. It's a special bolt, IIRC 1-15/16" long. DO NOT use a regular bolt!!!!! Get the right thing, if you don't have your old one!! A std length bolt will either be too short, and will fail to engage enough threads in the main cap and will strip the cap out; or the next longer std length will be long enough to go all the way through the main cap and hit the back of the bearing, and smash it against the crank. Very bad either way.

i don't like to weld to the pump. i weld a brace to the pick up and bolt it to the pump with one of the pump cover bolts. i also use red loctite on the pump bolt, the only bolt i loctite on a engine. i tried the ARP studs and had to ssand them down a little because they were too long. go easy on it when you screw it in and make sure it doesn't hit the bearing and if it does take a little off.
