FUEL PUMP INSTALLATION, HELP????????

Hey, I need advice on how to install a fuel pump on my 1992 firebird. 305 tbi, v8, auto. I have never done this before, and any detailed instruction would be very helpful. I do know that the job requires removal of the gas tank, which is about a 4hr., job. Please help advise. Thanks, Rob.

A $20 parts store shop manual would include all of the detail you'd need to do the job, and better pictures than what you'll get asking here.

Removing as much of the exaust over the axle and dropping the axle as far down as possible helps ALOT! Just did this job 3 weeks ago! NEVER AGAIN, if it can be avoided!!!

IF U TAKE THE REAR BRAKE LINE BRACKET OFF THE AXLE DROPS DOWN A LITTLE EXTRA MAKES IT A LITTLE EASIER

I did it this past weekend...and the weekend before that too.

Drain ALL fuel from tank
Disconnect battery cable
Jack up rear end (HIGH)
Remove wheels
Remove panhard bar
Remove panhard bar support bar
Support rear end
Unbolt shocks from axle
Remove swaybar endlinks
Unbolt bracket holding brake line
Lower axle
Remove springs if they didn't fall out
Unbolt exhaust from cat
Support muffler
Unbolt tailpipe hangers
Move exhaust out of the way
Remove heat shields
Disconnect fuel lines (catch can ready)
Disconnect fuel pump power
Remove fuel door and surround (on outside of car)
--Ensure back end of car is WAY in the air and the axle is all the way down and exhaust is off to the side--
Unbolt straps from tank while supporting it (get a buddy to help)
Remove tank straps from car
Wiggle it down and get the neck out of it's hole
Remove lock ring from the top
Carefully manuver the pump and sending unit out
Replace pump and then do it all in reverse

***some extra tips***
If your swaybar endlinks are old, they'll probably break. Get some new ones. You'll most likely need a breaker bar or an impact wrench to get the shock nuts off, same goes for the panhard bar hardware. Plan on spending the better part of the entire weekend doing this if it's your first time. Getting the tank out is hard, but I thought getting it back in was an even bigger pain. I reccomend getting longer bolts for the tank straps, just a little bit longer will do the trick. Some of the bolts have large heads, so make sure your socket or wrench set goes into the 22mm range. Unbolting the passenger side shock from the inside and removing it will help get the exhaust out of the way. Replace the o-ring that seals the pump. Be careful with the tank, you don't want to put a hole in it. Don't let the tank hang by the filler neck. When lowering the axle watch all the lines so none of them kink. Make sure you get ALL the gas out of your tank so it's lighter. Good luck.
