needing more speed

alright i have a 86 iroc z with a 305 tpi engine. my problem i'm having is that the car is pretty much shutting down at about 115 120 mph. i've heard that it has a govenor and that it shuts the fuel off when you reach that speed to keep you from continuing to your most probable death. but in the end i need to do something to get past this problem. is there anyway to just bypass the dang thing or do I HAVE to buy a stupid chip? (i'm not wanting to spend that much money so if there's a way to do it without buying something expensive then i'm willing to give it a shot.) can you just take a govenor out or will that fry the whole system?

help me quickly i've got a bet on a race this friday for 300$....

does it sound like you should know how to remove this? NO
if you knew how to do it would you probably kill your self? YES
will your car go faster than 120 in a 1/4 mile? NO

"continuing to your most probable death"

Wouldn't it be a lot cheaper to just jump out of a window of a very tall building??? The end result will be the same.

Take it to the track

wow your 305 tpi must have HUGE power to hit 115mph in the 1/4 mile race. Furthermore, the track is safer, don't need to see you on the news for another street racing death where u kill a family of 4 just out for a drive

Your car doesn't have a governor. I've had my LB9 way past 120. Granted, not in the 1/4 but no governor none the less.

HAHAHAHAAAAA. You're asking about something that the car doesn't even have. Why would we belive you have the cababilities to build a "Fast" car,

alright mr. oh you're so stupid... actually mine does have one and i know this from taking my camaro to dealership and running a test on it... the car has a govenor that shuts down the fuel system once you hit 118 mph preventing you from going any faster.... so who looks stupid now?

what are you 16 this your first car? were there no more imports in your area

no your car doesnt have a speed limiter only TBI cars and cars with oem 15in wheels that werent z rated i believe irocs didnt have them in 86 so unless you have the wrong prom then you dont have one. but if you did bring it to the dealer ship they could have told you it was the wrong one.

and by the way if you had one it would be at 120 not 118 again if you had actually taken it to the dealership they would have told you 120mph not 118

in otherwords you lie!

lol your limitation is that 305 w/ the 15" wheels, its actually the fact that your engine cant increase to the RPM needed to go faster than the 120mph, put some bigger tires on there, your speedo will need to be converted to electric and youll have to compensate for bigger wheels but thatll do it.

There actually are two fuel cut off constants in the PROM, a governer of sorts. From the factory they're set to 255 MPH and 10,000 RPM.

If you want to go faster than 120 MPH a new PROM won't do a thing for you. What you'll need is more Horse Power than a stock 305 TPI can deliver.

In short, on a 305 TPI you'll need to install a higher lift, longer duration cam, and a full performance exhaust system just for starters.... I suspect that you could get to 140+ MPH with the right setup.

Maybe you should say goodbye to that $300 and just skip the death race. Your car will thank you for it, even if no one else does....
