Only runs smooth when fuel tank is above half full

I have 91 FBird which runs rough and stalls when the fuel tank gets below half. I was thinking fuel pump and what ever feed lines are in the tank. I have not pulled one of these out before but I am assuming it is an assembly which must be replaced as a unit. Also is the only way to get to the fuel pump is by dropping the tank? How much of a job is it?

I've never done it, but I've read that you have to drop the rear end to safely get the tank out. I've read on forums that you can work the tank out without dropping the rear end, but I don't know how true that is. I've also read about people cutting access panels through their trunk panels... now there's a convenient idea, but I'd be really weary about cutting through metal to get to a container of flammable liquid.

I have seen that done. The few times I have seen people do it, they had the tank out already..

But the tanks sits a little bit down from there, if you take your time you should be able to cut a access panel without much worry. Just make sure you take your time and you have a steady hand, cutting the tanks itself would suck..

I think I will go with trying to get the tank out without lowering the rearend. If that doesn't work then lower the rearend. I hate to cut a hole in the car even if it does get covered up with carpet. I appreciate the input.

I don't think it's possible without lowering the rear end WAY down.

Click here for some directions I posted a little bit ago.
