305 build up page- i am amused lol :d

http://www.goingfaster.com/spo/325_h...chevrolet.html

they dynoed it with headers and it had 197 horse and 261 torque right out of the car ?? these things were only 140 anmd 150 horse rated though ? what happened ?

look at buildup part 3 when they swapped the Q jet carb for a performer lol thats just funny

and then when they put on the world heads they only got 28 more HP ?

wtf ?

however with the other parts changes such as the intake and cam it really looks promising

what do you think of the whole story/article in general ?

i am interested because im about to play around with a stock LG4 i just got the other day,

so.,..

The exhaust is pretty promising, that proves that our stock exhausts are just brutal.
I don't agree with the carb giving more HP. Wait, they swapped Q-jet to holley 750 DP, not a performer. Performer intake.

The xe262 and some ported stock heads would rock the kazbah right there. A cam is a big difference, that's for sure.

Internet filter won't let me on the site. **** or other sexually inappropriate content, apparently.

But, forget any dyno #'s on an engine dyno. They're going to be skewed right from the get-go, since the factory ratings are net HP, not gross like you're going to get in a magazine article.

Parts work together as a package. And, peak #'s don't tell you anything about performance.

So, get out the salt shaker.

That's all part of Black Echo's writeup from several years ago; from before he realized that his TBI project would never work, and abanadoned it, but left up those stupid web pages extolling its supposed virtues. He had scanned copies of both of those popular 305 buildups from about 8-10 years ago, the 325 HP one and the 400-whatever one that blew up on the dyno during the 2nd pull.

Whatever is on that whole site is just one person's biased and discredited opinion. Take it with a grain, no make that a HUGE boulder, of salt.

Don't forget, the 145 HP "rating" was with the motor AS INSTALLED in a car; stock exhaust, stock air cleaner, stock water pump, stock mechanical fan, stock horsepower-robbing EVERYTHING. The number on the engine stand were typical engine stand numbers; velocity stack on the carb, nice cool air at the intake, dyno headers, dyno cooling system, no accessories whatsoever on the front of the motor, etc. All that that number means, is that the act of installing that motor into that chassis, costs about 50 HP. Pretty normal really. Which incidentally is a sizeable part of the often-observed discrepancy between the advertised or Desktop Dyno output of a motor, and the observed RWHP once it gets into the car (besides dirve train losses).

Their later choice of Vortec heads (that eventually got them that 325HP number) was probably a good one, but they paired it with a SUPER VICTOR intake! That's a MONSTER intake for a little 305 with an XE262 cam. If anyone on this board suggested doing that combo they would get laughed right off the internet.

I bet a Performer RPM would work a lot better with that combo and bring that 4800 RPM torque peak down a bit.

Agreed with above- NEVER compare magazine HP ratings with factory HP ratings. 197HP bone stock with headers on an engine dyno sounds about right, actually, maybe a smidge high. Keep in mind Super Chevy (I think) did a similar buildup recently and got 222HP also from a bone stock LG4 305 with headers on an engine dyno but that was with open exhaust. So there's "optimistic" and then there's "outrageous." When you see magazine HP numbers those are your two choices. Definitely bring your salt shaker.

That's why it's so hard to explain to some people that making an HONEST 400 HP is not all that easy. They read magazine numbers and think just about anything will belt out 400+. Until they try it in their own car and get very disappointed when they find out they're 50HP or more shy of that in the real world.

which robs more power ?

do they really rob THAT much ??

they cant be that bad can they ?

I think the mechanical ones, the fly swatters, rob more than the clutch ones do. I use a nylon one, ultra lightweight etc. Always has loads of cooling, cost me $17 too. I don't think they're as bad as some people say.
