please help !

Hi guys.

84 camaro, 5.0L
On startup engine idles super rough and seems to run ultra rich. It also burns allot of oil. As the engine warms up, The idle normalises and it stops burning oil.
I posted this before but only got one response.
I know that oil burning on startup = valve stem seals, but that does not explain the terrible idle.
If I put it into drive before the engine warms up, she will stall almost right away.
Please help.
I am going crazy with this. First I thought it was a timing problem so I set the timing. Then I thought maybe EGR Valve so I changed that to.
Now I am out of ideas.

i think you should check the condition of your cat see if all that oil burning has plugged it and then check your plugs to see how many you have fouled
then pull your pcv valve out of the valvecover and shake it makesure it rattles like there is a BB in there make sure your choke is adjusted correctly also

rebuild your carb out and replace all the choke components, its all super old and probably gummed up.

I agree, your choke is probably adjusted too rich. Try checking it when the car is hot and make sure it's open all the way. Then check it when the car is cold and see how much spring pressure there is holding it shut.

yes make sure your choke is opening up and is always open after it is warmed up for the day

if not then there is a problem

either no power to the choke wire, or the choke assembly is bad

also if it is an ECM controlled carb and the computer wiring is not connected to it then it will run very rich

good luck
