Gas tank shielding and fuel pump connector

Hey guys,
I am in the process of droping my gas tank in my '91Z.
First - the gas tank shielding. How important is it to the function/protection of the gas tank? It is a pain in the butt to take off and on - small 7mm screws etc etc... When I welded my sfc, I never re-installed the cat heat shield as there was no room, and have had no problems since, however, I am a little leary to do the same with the shielding around the tank. Heat from the muffler, small rocks flying up etc. What do you guys recommend?

Second,

The fuel pump connector - how do you get it apart without destroying the connector? There is a small white plastic 'pin' that holds the male and female terminals together. I don't want to make a mess of the plugs....
TIA
-Andrew

Like you said, how safe do you feel with an exposed gas tank?? I'm sure GM put them there for good reason. I think the cat shield is more for interior comfert, but the tank shielding is probably more for saftey.

I'm not sure bout your connector, but mine has a little pry-clip just like all the connectors under the hood.

I took my tank shield off months ago, to replace the fuel pump, and never put it back on. No problems.

As far as muffler heat though, my muffler isn't right there anymore. I have a TSP Rumbler cat-back...The muffler is right behind the cat.

i would deff put that shield back on for protection reasons, and far as the plug, jut get like needle nose plyers or a regular screwdriver and pull it to the driver side, should slide right out, and then just pull the connector off... good luck
