Adjustable Msd rev limiter. How-to

Since anyone who's bought an MSD6AL ign box knows they include the worthless 3000, 8000, 11000 (joke) rev chips and purposly dont include probably the most common 5-5500 rpm which most sbc's rev to, and since im a cheap skate and dont want to give them 30 more bux for a little white resistor....ive made this to show how to make an even more usefull ADJUSTABLE rev chip....

First make a trip to your local Radio shack and purchase:

271-1720 (5K ohm audio taper Potentiometer)
Wire if you dont have any
And solder and solder gun if you also dont have them.

Potentiometer-

First off, take one of the existing worthless chips, such as the 8000 rpm one, and cut it, burn it, whatever... I just heated it up first, then pull the two steel bars out.

Then with the soldering iron, heat the bars up untill it spits out a plastic chunk (just like a gm u-joint)

Then solder the one end of the wire into the steel bars,

and the other ends of the wire to the 2 connectors shown here

Now you end up with this:

You now can set it from a rev limit all the way from IDLE to probably 6K or a little more, (probably 6800 ish if my math is correct)

-So go out and plug it in and turn it all the way counter clock wise and if in fast idle mode it should start stumbling a little, this will show if your connections are good and are working... Now turn it all the way clockwise and then back 1/4 turn, thats approximatly 4-5K rpm, now go out and tweak it to your desired redline!

Enjoy!, now you can loan your car/ truck out to whomever you have to and you now have a vallet mode at the touch of your fingertips The pics arent clear but they are off a cell phone, i had to figure all this out in an hour or so before it got dark.

Now your on your own making a mount for the control ****, im going to make a piece of sheet metal and put an **** on the switch and lable the rpms for easy future adjustments.

Part two.... Adjustable 2 Stage rev limiter. (for max stall rpm, then redline)

To be continued.......

Or for us lazy people:
Adjustable Module
(I just put this in for future searchers since it isn't sold by MSD)
Yours looks like it will be a lot handier to adjust and you could put a scale under the **** so you can tell where it is set.
If anybody wants I can hyjack the thread about how I used MSD's low buck RPM switch to make a rev limiter for a stock GM vacuum HEI distributor.
It can be unplugged easily to put the distributor back to stock if there is a problem.

oh i didnt realize they made one of those..... btw cartman, all you have to do is get a differnt potentiometer to go as high as you want....I guess this kinda takes the appeal away since they have one in stores, but its still cool to say yuou make one

I decide to post it in a separate thread:

By the way, you can get a plug at an electronics store that fits the module socket on the box so you don't have to sacrifice a module. I bought one a few years ago to do exactly what you've done, but never got around to it.

No guessing with this chart, either.
