copper line install

Did a search, most of them were about how to route the lines and how to place the gauges. I just burned my nylon line, luckily it happened under the hood so it didnt do any damage, just a little disconcerting smoke. I had bought a copper line last week to install, i guess i should have done it sooner.

Anyhow, i have never had to install one before, everycar ive owned before came with it. So im not exactly sure how its done.

The gauges are installed, they are routed, i just dunno how the line goes on. Heres some pix to explain what i mean.

From left to right, you see the line, one end of the fitting, a copper sleeve type thing, and the other end of the fitting. Second pic is a close up.

The sleeve thing is what creates the seal, it slides over the line, and cannot come out of the fittings when screwed together. BUT how is the sleeve "held" onto the line? Glue? brazing? sealant? gasket maker? Any help appreciated. At the moment, the sleeve slides on and off the freely, and with ease.

That is a compression fitting. You will slide the cap/nut (the one on the left) onto the line first, then the compression sleeve. Make sure you slide them down a little ways so that the copper pipe is inserted fully into the fitting on the right. Then slide the fitting on the left towards the fitting on the right and screw them together. When you tighten the two fittings together, they will crimp the sleeve down to make a leakproof seal. That's it and all you have to do.

Damn, that sounds too easy. Any special tools needed? It sucks cuz autometer didnt provide instructions. Ill give it a try, will have posted results soon. Maybe tonight even.

Nope, no special tools. Just a couple wrenches that will fit on the 2 fittings. I could be wrong, but it appears to be 9/16" for one and possibly a 1/2" for the other.


Edit: Make sure you do tighten them fairly snug, otherwise, you will have a leak. When tightened properly, they tube will not pull out or turn freely in the fitting.
