the a/c is easy to remove, if you get an a/c delete pulley. you just take off the serpentine belt, take out the compressor, and put the pulley in it's place.

obviously you have to unhook all of the plumbing for the a/c first, but thats as simple as just checking out what's there taking it apart. just follow where all of the lines and everything goes and make sure you dont leave anything unhooked or open that shouldnt be.

the smog pump is a little harder. i am assuming that you want to take out the whole A.I.R. system as well. as far as the pump itself goes, you can either leave it there (just unhooked), or if your local gm dealer likes you as much as mine does, he pulled a LOT of strings and got me a smog pump delete pulley from out of canada somewhere. its an illegal part, so you may have to do some looking.

but, to take out the A.I.R. tubes, you just unscrew them from teh manifolds, and plug them with some brass plugs, or you can just cut the tube about 1/2" from where it goes into the manifold and flatten the hell out of it and screw it back in tempororily. then, just follow the lines again, and unhook everything.

there is an AIR tube going into the cat, so make sure you take care of that one too. without the AIR system, you wont pass emissions, and it won give you a power increase, but it just cleans everything up under the hood a LOT. same with the ac.

sorry this is such a broad description, but i dont have time to get into it now. also, its been a while since i took mine out so i dont remember specifics. shoot me an email at z28boy@twcny.rr.com if you have any questions.

here is a pic of the pulleys:

hope this helps

if so where can i get one?
if not what size belts will i need for a serpentine system?

That thing you have circled in red is the heater valve. Also, you may want to have the A/C de-pressurized before you go pulling it apart.

Why remove the smog pump when you wont be able to pass smog and wont see any power gains from it?

The item in red is the AIR control/Diverter valve assembly.
It has two solenoids in it for directing the smog pump air.
First solenoid selects if smog pump is vented to atmosphere or is to be used. The other solenoid will select the path to the manifolds or the cat (if first solenoid is used) or something like that.
If you are taking off the smog pump thaen it goes to the trash as well along with the air tubes on the manifolds, tube to the cat, check valves and the tube that wraps around the back of the engine.
They all are for the AIR system.
One note, the wrap around tube is bolted on both heads at the rear. It probably will not come out without removing the intake.
The whole system removal won't show any significant gains but it does clean up the compartment if you don't need to pass emmisions. Better to leave it all there if you do need E-check.

why?

the reason i'm removing the ac and smog is because i don't need the ac and want to clean up the engine bay, the smog becuase all i have to pass is the sniffer and i think i can handle it without the smog stuff, also part of it is already missing from my car from the previous owner i believe, i'm also putting hedman headers and y-pipe on so i won't have all that tubing floating around so why not clear the rest of the **** out,

can anyone answer my questions??
another is how would i route the belt if i could run the serp system without an ac or smog pulley, if it's possible?

When I had some work done on my 87, my local mechanic removed the whole a.i.r. system for me, without asking, was kinda nice. power steering, waterpump, alternator, was all I had on my system. I had to plug a couple vacum's after the removal, but that was about it.

so your only running the three pully's also, if you could do you think you could get a picture of the engine for me for the routing of the belt, and if you happen to know the length of the belt??

i believe there is a diagram in the home page tech articles of thirdgen.org. i was looking at it too. but after hearing it's not gonna help performance, seems like a waste of time to me.
