Fuel pump

Would there be any reason to have an electric in tank fuel pump on an 87 camaro, that was carb'd and had a block mounted mechanical fuel pump? I shut my car off yesterday and when i went to change my oil today, there was a buzzing sound (like a electric motor) coming from the back of my car?

Re: Fuel pump

i didnt thinkg you could get a 350 with a carb in 87... and it would be silly to have a mechanical fuel pump along with the intank pump...

Re: Fuel pump

In 87, GM put both the mechanical pumps and the electric in-tank pumps on the cars.

Re: Fuel pump

It had a 305 carb's in it...i threw the 350 in it. The 305 had a mech. fuel pump on it so i threw it on the 350. When i was under the car, i heard a buzzing from the back of the car around the gas tank. that's why i was asking. If there isn't one in the tank, what would it be?

Re: Fuel pump

I just went out and checked to see if it was still running again, and it was. It's not the hatch pull down motor. Makes sense why my last battery wouldn't hold a charge.

Re: Fuel pump

To help prevent vapor lock, IIRC.

Re: Fuel pump

There should be a fuel pump relay under the hood. Look next to the brake booster. Sounds as if sticking.
