Power Steering Trouble?
Power Steering Trouble?
I have 1984 z28 and at low RPM i have trouble turning the steering wheel, but once i rev the motor up a bit it gets easier to turn. The power steering fluid isnt low and the belt is tight. Is this the power steering pump or is it something else??
Re: Power Steering Trouble?
It is possible that the pump is not producing enough pressure to provide enough assist. A buddy in a shop would be nice to have so you could get access to the proper gauges to check it. The readings are very high, it does require a special gauge. There are some things you can check, but nothing that will give you the definitive answer you are looking for.

Re: Power Steering Trouble?
So what are some possible causes, other than just a bad pump? Would loose belt tension cause this? Would a problem in the steering box cause these symptoms? What are some of those checks I can perform? I'd like to rule out as much as possible before I undertake the job of replacing the steering pump.
