Always a funky oil reading

For as long as I've had my car the oil reading when I pull out my dipstick is funky. Sometimes it reads dead-on. Other times the oil has spread up the disptick about 6 inches past the "operating range" marking. Is this typical for your average SBC? What normally prevents oil from getting too far up there?

Engine off. Pull dipstick, wipe it off, reinsert. Pull dipstick, read.

Is that what you're doing?

Re: Always a funky oil reading

I noticed that in your avatar, that your car is in the driveway. It is on an angle, please check your oil when it is on a level piece of ground.

To the letter.

And it happens if the car is on flat ground too.
