Re: HV oil pump or stock?

If you're rebuilding the bottom end it won't be necessary. The high volume oil pumps put a bigger strain on the distributor gear.
Here's the only scenario where a high volume oil pump is needed:
You have a stock engine with 150,000+ miles on it and when idling hot, the oil pressure drops too low. You don't want to spend the money to rebuild the engine, so you put in a high volume oil pump and sell the car to a sucker.

Re: HV oil pump or stock?

I don't even use a HV pump in my car. At 7000 rpm, too much oil is in the top end of the engine with a HV pump.

Re: HV oil pump or stock?

The only real need for a HV pump is if you are feeding a drain on the oil system ie. blower, turbo etc.
It all started back when we used wide clearances on the bearings, that caused massive amounts of oil flying around in the crankcase (=bad).

Re: HV oil pump or stock?

Usually if your clearances are stock, higher volume = higher pressure. So you get higher pressure across the board, and hit the pressure relief earlier.
A good use might be if you have added additional volume, ie twin turbos. That way you will have ample pressure across the board with that added volume needed to be oiled.
So yea, stock pump. High pressure spring if you want, that'll keep it from hitting the pressure relief early, so that you can have more oil pressure at the higher RPM's.
