Starter problems

Ok, I turn the key, and the starter just spins freely then I back the key off, and try again, and it works. This is a regular thing on my 91 Camaro (305). Sounds like the solenoid isnt pushing the gear out.

What are my options? I mean, a brand new starter was $100 (OUCH!) and I have heard that some people use the starters off like, 96 camaros, something about them being smaller? Im not sure. I want to fix this tomorrow, and I would like to not spend $100.

Re: Starter problems

If you want to stay under $100, forgot about the "96 Camaro" starter. The one other people are referring to is the LT1 starter, which is smaller, lighter, and uses gear reduction for more cranking power. They're not cheap though, especially if you don't have a core to trade in. I'm betting that the bendix assembly is going bad on your original starter. That's the part that kicks the gear out into the flywheel teeth. Most parts stores carry remanufactured starters with a lifetime guarantee for about $50-$60 with a core. If you really want to go cheap, you can usually get one with a 1 year warranty for $30-$40. I always spend the extra for the lifetime one since they only replace parts as needed on the 1 yr. models, whereas the lifetime ones get fully rebuilt. Besides, when the 1 yr. starter dies a couple of years down the road, you have to spend money again instead of getting a free replacement. Another option would be an aftermarket mini-starter. They're a lot smaller and lighter than the stocker, plus they're gear reduction just like the LT1 starters. You can find those all over on ebay for less than $100. In fact, here's a link to a really nice one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/CHEVY...mZ260122499002
