installing a water pump???? help!!!

Ok i took my car in to get a look at a small coolent drip and transmission leak and very very small oil drip/leak.

the guy says the transmission pan gasket is bad. 13 dollar kit with gasket and filter. after labor and 30mins of driving to test they came with a 115-130 dollar job. wtf!

now the oil drip they say is the gasket between the transmission and engine gasket or from what i understood. god knows how much they want for dropping the tranny to get to the gasket.

also they say my water pump is bad or just teh gasket. either way the water pump has to come out.

now my question is mostly for the water pump. how hard is it to remove and install? is the pump connected to anything "inside" the engine? or is it just another item on the outside of the engine? with a new water pump and gasket is it more worth it for me to save a few bucks and do it myself or is it worth the less headaches and bite the bullet and let them rape me on labor?

anyone?

Re: installing a water pump???? help!!!

The price you got from the shop was about right if you figure that they are going to charge you about $60+ an hour for labor.

As for your water pump, its not hard and not connected to anything internally, you just have to get all the accessories out of the way and be sure to get all the gasket material off the block.

Oh and there is no "gasket" between the engine and transmission unless they are referring to the rear main seal.

Replacing the transmission pan gasket and filter should have been about a 15 minute job for a shop with a hoist. You could do it yourself in the driveway in about 30 minutes, including the time it takes to put the car on jackstands.

Re: installing a water pump???? help!!!

700-r4 should be 4.7 quarts, The tranny gasket will be the easiest of the 3 jobs, just buy a filter kit and it comes with a gasket. Remember the torque specs for transmision pan bolts are inch pounds not foot pounds i know this from experience . The water pump isnt to bad, the main thing there is not to puke a hole in your radiator, take it out or put plywood there to protect it. All of these jobs are pretty well laid out in your Haynes or Chiltons manual and if you dont have those online at Autozone.
Good luck and if your not bleeding your not doing it right.
