I installed a starter for a 96 Corvette LT1 on my L98 GTA.

It starts the car but I don't think the starter disengages since I hear this loud clacking noise while running. To verify this I tried engaging the starter while running and nothing changed.

I have read in many threads that this is a common mod so, any suggestions on what I did wrong?

You might have to shim the starter down some. It could be binding from being too close in to flywheel. You can get shims in different thickness. I forget how much clearance you have to have but try looking at about any Chevy repair manual. They pretty much all should be the same clearance.
I haven't had that problem in so long that I forgot the amount.
Maybe someone else can chime in.

just to verify you can shut the car off just fine and the starter doesn't keep trying to spin right? if not then sounds like you need to reshim the thing

 

Thanks! I shimmed the heck out of it and it's great now. The new starter is much easier to put in than that huge OEM one and I like the sound of the gear reduction starter.
