82 T/A Speedometer Question

Hi everyone--

I have an 82 T/A with 32k original miles on it. I just came back from a 150 mile trip with the car and now the speedometer is having some issues. Instead of the needle moving smoothly, it now moves in a somewhat jerky manner. This is especially true for speeds between 20 and 30 mph.

Before my trip, the speedo worked perfectly. Does my speedometer cable need lubrication or replacement? If so, how would I go about doing that? Do I need to remove the instrument cluster, or can I unplug it at the transmission?

Assuming you have cruise control, it could be your cruise governor, which is under the hood. Or, could be the cable(s) need lubing.

If no cruise, or if it's the cable going to the speedo, you need to disconnect from behind the speedo - usually easiest by removing the cluster.

Re: 82 T/A Speedometer Question

No cruise on my car.

How in the world do I pull the cluster out? This is one of those great interiors with the fake and real torx head bolts. Any tips on cluster removal?

I've never worked on a 'Bird, so I'll let those more familiar with the particulars answer that one.
