305- Lt1 cam,
wasup everyone, i don't wanna hear anything about not rebuilding the 305,, i have various reasons.
my engine is the original 91's 5.0 and im just gonna spruce it with rings gaskets, litlle head porting and gasget matching, ported plenum, stock bottom end, and im looking to do something to help with the air a little more, so im wondering,,,
lt1 cam- and probably change the springs?
1.6 stainless roller rockers, and maybe keep springs
or both?
keep in mind its a dirt cheap motor , only to last into mid- late winter to get me used to tuning. all the machine work and porting/decking/honing is all free.
obviosly headers and a cone filter will be on there, and eventually ill tune on it, but i want it to run good on a stock tune. it has the 5.0 stick cam (im told its the best). i will also be shaving the head and block down for a slight 9- 9.5 ish compression ratio.
so keep prices in mind, so far ive got all the parts and labour for bottom end(including block machining/porting) for a 15 pack of busch. and my heads will get a free 3 ange grind and mild porting.
any ideas on a little valvetrain bump up? will a zz4 be way to much?

Re: 305- Lt1 cam,
I woukldn't go through al that for a little LT-1 cam . I put in a ZZ4 ( 350 ..but listen) .... It started right away and ran really good on the stock 305 tune ....with 22 lb injecotrs ( wrong for bin file) . I myself would go bigger . But also remember you have SD ...so yeah tuneing will be more of an issue for you . Try reading the tuneing articles here to get a better idea of what to ask . regardless of which cam you choose .... if you are spending the wad on them nice rockers ...why not get the springs aswell
Best of luck

You need to verify you have sufficient valve travel from valve seated to retainer contact with the top of the guide. You need at least .060" more travel than lift at the valve. Typical lift limit with unmodified stock heads is .480" or less.

Re: 305- Lt1 cam,
As for changing the springs I'd reccomend it if there still the original ones from when the motor was fresh in it younger days(make sure they can handle the lift of which ever cam you chose)I've seen some impresive flow numbers with the stock heads ported/polished with the small bore of a 305 so I'am sure they'll give great results when there done
Godd luck with the rebuild man
