simple newbie question...

Sorry for being so simple but I bought my first Camaro (92 RS) this week, and plan on doing a full tune up, the usual stuff.

I did do a search for spark plug DIY's etc but nothing came up, surely there are some tune up DIY's on here?

I have done my share of tune ups I just like to read up before I do it, esp as the 4 plugs on the left side look like they have a lot of hoses/wires to move to even get to the plugs.

Any tips or a link to a write up would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Re: simple newbie question...

hi there welcome to TGO

try through the wheel tub opening, sometimes you can with ratchet extension

but have to remove inner liner and stuff probably

this method works on many makes and models such as s-10 trucks and G bodies and B bodies and so on

but unsure on these cars

probably not though

you will probably have to get very creative and acrobatic with extensions and knuckles and so on
and as far as hoses and tubes go well then youll have to just unplug some and move them

theres no real away around that

a tip to installing plugs is to use a length of vacuum hose that will fit on the ends of the plugs

works really slick to get them back in the holes and threaded in

once you use hose you will do it again in the future and be glad

search feature is disabled on the forums right now and wont be back up for a week or so, maybe longer

good luck

Re: simple newbie question...

Thanks - Yeah I have been using the hose trick for plugs for a while, makes it SO much easier getting them back in without ruining the thread.

As for searching on here RS305 I did, believe me, but I am pretty sure it just wasn't working. When no forum showed ANY result for "Spark" "plug" or tune up" I think it's safe to say it wasn't working LOL

I think I'll just get those hoses off and go at it, it can't be any harder than my straight 6 BMW with individual coil packs!!

I am not sure I understand the tip to work from below though?
Do the plugs face down under the cover??

Re: simple newbie question...

some of the plugs are easier to get to when the car is lifted and working underneath the car.... I have an 89 w/tpi and it is easier on one in particular to get out... use good jack stands or ramps and stay safe...

Re: simple newbie question...

Yes,useing ramps to get underneath makes mine much easier on a couple of plugs. Not haveing emmissions also helps.

Re: simple newbie question...

On my L98, I think there's only about 2-3 plugs that I get from the top of the engine (and they're all on the driver's side head). I would daresay it's not even possible to get all of them from the top--at least not without removing a lot of equipment. So I just prepare to spend time under the car when the plugs need to be changed. It's really not that bad.

Oh and Randy's tip about using a small (2"-3") vacuum hose to put the plugs back in saves a LOT of frustration!
