i have an 85 z28 with a newly rebuilt 383 in it with terrible overheating problems. If i run the car for any period of driving, i come to a stop and my coolant is smoking. not only smoking, but it is boiling out of the overflow valve on the coolant resevour. any ideas on what is wrong with it. let me know any suggestions.

 

What temperature is it getting up to?

 

umm is youre fan working... Do you evan have a fan???

 

I looked at the info you have next to youre post. I says you have a V6. Did you do an engine swap and keep the V6 radiator? just a dumb question. The raidator could be bad if you got it used, have it pressure tested.

 

that v6 was from my old car. I bought a camaro with a 383 since then. i do have a fan, and im not sure of the temp. how should i gage the temp? if there is anything else you need to know to help me find out what my problem is let me know.

 

A temperature gauge reading would be useful.

 

You can buy a mech temp guage at a good price and mount it under the hood (I got one near the battery) then put the probe in either a free spot in the head or intake (I have mine in the intake near the t/stat). take it for a quick spin then stop and pop the hood to see whats going on, it shouldent read over 240'F MAX. but if it dose look for the main reasons

1: Fan/fans not working.
2: Timing WAY to advanced.
3: Has it got an Airdam? (but this is normaly when moving not still)

I found my car would over heat every time I drove it in warm weather (Stock 5L) but when I swaped out the stock single thermo fan and replaced it with a set of 2,700CFM Dual Thermo Fans with shroud it stoped doing it, Now it never passes 220'F under load and 190/200'F normal driving and that is in 38'C weather.

 

Try a radiator cap.
