upgrading oil pan, sugestions
so i currently have a stock oil pan and dont dare do all of the things i want to do with the car.
Looking to get into some Solo1/Solo2 (timed road racing/pilon courses) with the occasional trip to the drag strip mostly to see how the cars running and just for weekend fun.
wouldnt dare autocross the car with the stock pan for obvious reasons, so what pan would you reccomend i choose? on summit all the pans i see are either circle track or drag race specific.

Re: upgrading oil pan, sugestions
That's a good question; especially since we have to be so careful about fitment with the starter, headers, etc. Plus, do we need a pan with windage scrapers (I think that's what it's called)???
I've noticed in Jeg's & Summit that there can be a HEFTY price difference between some of the name brand manufacturers and I havn't run across any articles that explain if our oiling system is big enough or if a one quart capacity version is all that much better than a stock pan. Anyone????

Re: upgrading oil pan, sugestions
ya i cant believe theres no replies to this?
this is the sort of topic that should be a sticky. Guy at the performance shop said happens all the time with l98 and lt1 motors, guy bought his shiny new fourth gen, took it out autocrossing once and roasted the motor.\
our oil pans are a joke as far as oil control is concerned.
Whats the solution?

bump again, why is this question not being responded too??? Nitro
Re: upgrading oil pan, sugestions
Because heavy cornering causing oil starve is not a common thing
Upgrade to a dry sump if your still concerned about a properly baffled pan failing
Otherwise go to an autocross event and ask a SBC car what pan he uses

doug,
Here is something to take into consideration. When installing a larger oil pan, typically, you are reducing the routing for your y pipe.
In my last build, I swapped out my stock 5 quart for a 6 quart moroso oil pan. Then when installing the y pipe on my edelbrock tes headers it began to rattle between the oil pan and the crossmember. I did take it to the muffler shop and they did reduce the y pipe diameter but lucky me the problem did not go away. So that is one thing to take into consideration.
I don't know how you feel about tpis but I remembered they do have an oil pan in there mix that might be what your looking for. Don't know how well it really works but it is as follows:

Re: upgrading oil pan, sugestions
im not looking for anything bigger per say, my issue is with the lack of oil control and shitty pickup system.
i would like to road race the car and need to know the pickup isnt going to go dry in hard cornering

Re: upgrading oil pan, sugestions
There's a member here selling one of those TPIS oil pans like onfire mentioned in the classifieds for $75 IIRC. He posted a pic, and it looks like a nice, quality piece. It's still the same size as stock, so you'll have no fitment issues, and they added baffling/windage stuff to it.

Re: upgrading oil pan, sugestions
hes selling it for 250 which is still a descent deal, too bad his one is for 80-85 block, 86+ is a different PN and thats what i need
thats good info tho, did some more googling and it looks like the canton piece is pretty sweey, theyre the only ones that have a road race pan that is custom for the different years of our car
milodon has a nice pan but its just SBC Road race pan, no specifics on what itll fit

Re: upgrading oil pan, sugestions
I just did a build and put on a Milodon 7 quart pan. This is for 2 reasons, more oil stays cooler, and if you are going racing, run 5 quarts and the oil is much further from the crank and reduces windage.
However, this pan left little room for my exhaust crossover, so that had to be smashed and re-routed, and it also did not have clearance for the knock sensor, so I had to attack the lip with a grinder. This is a drag race style pan, I would suggest looking into their roadrace pan, which would be a much better solution in your case. I believe the same pans for LT-1s work on all 1pc rr seal blocks, and the drag race pans are not baffled well for high corner g's.

Hey 19doug90, Have you considered Moroso's p/n 20205 ? It's 7qt with kick-outs on each side and fits the one piece rear main seal blocks.Mine came with a baffle in it at no charge and it's painted too. Check it out.

Re: upgrading oil pan, sugestions
thanks for the heads up, that moroso pan looks descent for a really good price but i really need something designed for road race purposes, the motor is pretty mild not worried about problems at the track but in hard g's gotta know i got oil at the pickup
i dont think ill get a milodon one cause their road race pan is very non specific for what cars will fit, definitly get the impressions its an install it and make everything else work around it.
the canton piece while somewhat expensive, seems to be specifically altered for each year of vehicle, and is probably the way ill end up going
definitly still open to other sugestions tho

Re: upgrading oil pan, sugestions
sweet, i saw there was an add up for a pan and just figured you quoted the wrong price
thanks
----------
hmm just realized this is probably the piece he has from TPIS
Oil Pan, 5 qt., F Body, 1-piece seal, RH dipstick........$185.00
where as this is what i think im looking for
Canton Road Race Pan, 87-97 F Body.........$345.00
dont want to take any chances witht he motor, arent going to do anything too serious, but solo1 can be more then punishing enough to get oil away from the pickup

Yeah, I wasn't quite sure how serious of an oil pan you were looking for, but I figured I'd give you the link to that one since it's such a good price. I'm half tempted to contact him myself and pick it up for the rebuilt L98 I've got sitting on the engine stand at the moment. I don't plan on any autocrossing with mine, so it'd be a nice upgrade from the stock one on my ride. I noticed you're running a Tremec trans. How do you like it? I've got a TKO-500 sitting in the garage that I haven't gotten around to installing yet. Thread Starter

Re: upgrading oil pan, sugestions
the tko 600 is awesome, the shifts are VeRy notchy, but so firm and positive, its great can just hammer through the gears, no need to baby it at all.
personally ive just had some nightmares with my spohn crossmember not fitting and drivetrain vibrations because of a misaligned drivetrain, thats just my plight tho, the tranny rocks
