if you cut the access panel, it ends up being more work the first time around, and potentially more dangerous. after that though, it would be a breeze to replace the pump.

if you have the time, tools, and space to do it by dropping the tank, do it that way.

if you have nowhere to work and limited tools, it is still probably not a good idea to make the access panel, because ideally you want some cutting tools, welding tools (if you want to weld on a nice aftermarket access panel like from summit to make it look good). i wanted to do this, but i found out you need to cut high pressure metal fuel lines, and I don't really want the worry in the back of my mind, of my jerry-rigged fuel lines leaking.

if you really want to do this though, research research research, get all of the right tools, and do a quality job. there are going to be people in here calling it a hack job and all of that lame ****. bottom line is they don't know your skill level, and are spouting out personal opinion. it's your car, if you want to do it and you think you can do a quality job then go for it. only thing i ask is if you do it and don't do a good job....please tell the person you sell it to about that, otherwise they'll be PISSED to see a true "hack" job.

Good advice synful. I think most guys who contemplate cutting the access panel don't realize you have to cut the metal fuel lines too. That wouldn't bother me at all on a carbureted car where you're only sucking fuel through the line, but I sure wouldn't want to mess with them on a fuel injected car that runs up to 50 psi through those lines, unless you're really good at fabbing up AN style union fittings where you cut the lines.
