Burnt oil on a fresh motor?

I just changed my oil for the second time since I got my car on the road. It had maybe 300 miles on it, and it was dark black, and it smelled burnt. I'm thinking the y pipe is causing this, but I don't know for sure. I had edelbrock headers, and y on my last thirdgen, without problems. Only difference is I have a Kevko stock appearing 5 qt pan now. The y pipe isn't touching the pan, but it's very close. I just ordered a clamp on heat shield that is 12" long, open on the bottom, and it comes with hose clamps. I don't know what else could be causing this.
There's no fuel smell in the oil. I don't think I have severe engine damage, but I hope not. thanks
