Embarassing Starting Problem

The car is a 1985 Z28 Camaro with a 5.7L TPI. About a month ago is started having problems starting. It would eventually start every time, but it would take about 15 or 20 seconds of it cranking. It would start off cranking really slow and then right before it would actually fire, it would crank rather fast. I don't know where to start on this problem. I replaced the fuel filter about a year ago and the plugs and wires are 3 or 4 months old. Oh and also, when I start to crank it, it acts like the battery is really low/dead, but then eventually cranks and the voltage is normal. Any suggestions, please let me know and thanks in advance!

Re: Embarassing Starting Problem

It'll actually do it whether it's warm or cool. Someone suggested that it could be the battery cables because it's not getting enough juice to the coil to start it up right away. Does that sound correct?

I guess it could also be the starter, but it doesn't cut out or grind or anything.

Re: Embarassing Starting Problem

if starter checks out ok the how about this, just happend to my 91 z28/350. have u replace the distributor? if not, take some time and pull the dist. cap off grab the rotor and try to turn it clockwise and counter clock wise, it should be solid as if glued, it there is play (the more you can twist the worse) then it is time to replace. other signs are if you step on it and it seems as if something is holdin u back or it wants to die then it is the dist. do not drive it unless you want to get stranded like i just got LOL hope this helps Bruce
