What is this? pics included
Im removing the smog pump in my 87 camaro and was wondering if this(shop vac looking can) works with the smog pump?? There is a line coming off it that leads to the motor and when u unplug it the car idles like crap but if u block the tube off it runs good again?

Thats the charcoal canister--its essentially a vent connected to the top of fuel tank. It doesnt really have anything to do with the smog pump..

According to pictures in my manual, there is a filter-like object inside which gas fumes from the tank go through. I don't think there would be a point in removing it.

It vents the fuel tank. It has a charcoal bed in it that absorbs fuel vapors. When the engine is running, the vapors are pulled out of the bed and burned in the engine.
It's one of those emissions things that serves a purpose and doesn't hurt anything. The only line it would have in common with the A.I.R. pump is a vacuum line, used by each component for valve actuation.
