Need help in the right direction

Hey guys,
My step-dad recently gave me his 85 firebird. Im going to put in new carpet and make the inside look all nice and what not. But my question lands in the mechanics. What can i do to make it run better. I've had suggestions to go to an auction and buy a chevy cop car for about $300 and transplant the engine, radiator, and transmission (i have a v6) would that be a start or what should I do to get this going?

well, cops generally beat their car to death, so i would stay away from a used police motor. the radiator would not fit. What are you plans for the car? street? drag? need to pass emissions?

clean car up , drive and enjoy . take your time , check this board under eng. swaps . do not be stupid and start tearing things apart before you know for sure what you are doing . [ i have done that many times with regret each time ] if and when you want to drop in a v8 , research , research . have engine in place and all parts ready to go before you start .

yeah i second stay away from the "cop" cars... think about it... cops dont give a crap about them... they dont own the cars. think of how many times they have gunned that engine for doughnuts and coffee. not to mention the times they actually had a reason.. and often they dont get thier oil changed every 3000 miles.
