Valvesprings?

How do I check to see if I have bad valvespring? I am having some issues with the motor and I was told that this might be one of the problams.

Re: Valvesprings?

You can remove the valve covers and visually inspect the springs for broken coils.
Bad valve springs will often show up on a manifold vacuum guage as a fluctuating/vibrating guage needle as you rev the motor.
Other than that you have to remove them to test the spring pressure.

Also, I always put the head of a hammer in my hand and use the handle to push open valves that are completely closed.
Helped me locate valve springs that have "gone away" (gone limp).
It will be obvious.
You can then replace the spring without pulling the head.
Limp springs will not usually show up on a compression test but will show up on a vacuum gauge.
