Oil Filter Bypass Valve in Adapter

Hi,

I was changing the oil today in my 88 5.7 liter GTA. I noticed there is no springloaded oil filter bypass valve in the oil filter adapter plate. All there was was the inlet hole and the outlet pipe. I'm used to seeing 3 holes on a typical adapter : inlet hole, outlet pipe hole, and a hole covered by a springloaded valve which opens when the oil pressure gets high enough, and bypasses the filter.

Is there any oil pressure bypass on this car anywhere? Or does it rely on the bypass that is built into the filter itself ?

No oil pressure problems. Just wondering what happens if the oil filter gets clogged, or partially clogged, and I rev the car pretty high. I guess the oil would go around the builtin bypass at the front of the filter itself, assuming there was a builtin bypass in that particular filter. Right ??

Thanks

Yes, that's correct.

I would have thought the adapter plate would have a bypass like most small blocks, but it's been a long time since I owned my 88.

The bypass is a pressure differential valve. When the engine is running and oil is flowing through the filter, the oil pressure is the same on both sides of the valve. When the filter becomes plugged, the pressure drops on the outlet side of the pressure on the inlet side pushes the valve open which bypasses the filter.

Same model I have. You should be looking at the oil cooler when you take the filter off. It's an add-on, on top of the filter base.
If you were to remove the oil cooler you'll see the bypass in the base. It's got one trust me.
