dissy off a tooth,burn rich?

if my dissy is off a tooth what would it do either way ,tooth off behind ,tooth off ahead? because mine isn't running right (can't seem to time it) everything is new ,but ,it will run i think rich cuz it puts off strong fumes from exhaust.

Off a tooth would mean you have to turn the dist cap a lot to get the timing back to spec.
Is your ignition timing set right?

Strong fumes also can mean a misfire, check for that.
