How much vacuum loss at PCV?

Car: 89 IROC convert.
Engine: tpi 305
Transmission: T-5
Axle/Gears: 3.42 10 bolt
How much vacuum loss at PCV?
I'm having trouble with a fast erratic and rough idle since changing to headers and a 5 speed on my TPI 5.0.
I'm looking for vacuum leaks, without any major luck. I took the hose off the PCV valve and held my thumb over it and it made a pretty big difference in idle speed, and it seemed to smooth it out a bit.
Is this normal? The valve is only a few years old and rattles when you shake it, but I cleaned it with carb cleaner anyway.
Once reinstalled it acted the same as before.
Any advice is appreciated.
