What makes my engine do this?

So I was craving some speed and I was coasting around 10 waiting for this car to drive by me. (Road Hog coming opposite way) and 1. I floored her and my RPMs jumped to 5K and then it shot like a bat out of hell, engine rising and sounded incredible. I was like Holy S**T! So I was gonna do this one more time, I was going about 15 (Giving it gas) and then I floored it and it didn't shoot like I was expecting, it was just a basic launch I guess.

So does coasting vs slight Gas make a different in the launch? Or does it depend on where my RPMs are at?

Another example would be when I was going 25ish up a steep hill and then floored it and it was like number 1. then a second time I was just getting on the hill at 10 and I floored it and it was that same basic launch.

BTW: These little romps, am I wasting a ton of gas or just a little?

Re: What makes my engine do this?

not sure but i would guess from the tranny being in second already at 15 miles per hour with slight gas and only staying in second. did it down shift? at coasting at 10 mph you [possibly could have been in second as well but with a quick shift into first for compesation of such a heavy load and wide open throttle would cause your car to feel like a rocket being launched. i've had this experience with many auto's but not thirdgens..never owned one. so i am just throwin this out there for ya to think about.

no worries just find a back road but since you stated the license thing i'd advice you to take caution as for these sleeping giants have a mind of their own and decide how they want to run when they want to run and where they want to run.
